How to have a Calm Black Friday
Black Friday is upon us, and I wanted to share a few heartfelt thoughts.
As a sensitive person, I have always found Black Friday overwhelming. Even before the Internet, I never stormed the shops for the chance of the ‘deal of the year’ the day after Thanksgiving. That day always sounded like a bit of a nightmare to me. Our online world has amplified the frenzy, and just like Christmas, Black Friday comes earlier and earlier every year. No matter how much we appreciate a good deal, it’s a lot.
Here are some suggestions for a calmer Black Friday season:
Take a deep breath and put on your discernment cap. There are going to be a lot of FOMO-inducing messages these next couple of weeks, and being clear on what you want will make it easier to navigate it all with open eyes and mindful intention.
Make a list. You know me, I love my lists! List all the products, services, or courses you’ve had your eye on throughout the year. Mark those that will move your business forward or help it feel calmer (totally a criterion for me!), not keep you stuck with yet another shiny thing you didn’t need. Then see if they have a sale this year.
There is a lot of economic uncertainty for small businesses this year, and for many, a Black Friday sale can make the difference between survival or not. I know that sounds a bit dramatic, but I do think about this when I receive yet another BF email; if it’s something I am not interested in, I delete it and quietly wish them well.
What I do appreciate about Black Friday is the opportunity to shine a light on some of my online business friends and their excellent offerings. There is so much creativity and innovation happening in our corner of the internet, amid challenging times.
