I need a website. Should I DIY it or hire a web designer?

So you’re ready to take the plunge and create a website for your business. That’s exciting! And one of the most important steps you’ll take towards launching or growing your business – a website is a must for businesses these days, and it not only gives your business instant credibility, but it also offers your potential customers an easy and efficient place to connect with you.

But first there’s a big decision to make: should you hire a web designer or tackle it yourself?

There’s no right or wrong answer; it all comes down to what is right for you and your needs. I am a web designer who has also taught over 2,500 students how to build their own website, so I have seen both sides of the equation.

Here is what to consider when weighing up the pros and cons of each option; much of it comes down:

  • Technical inclination

  • Creative interest

  • Money vs. time

Building your own website might be right for you if:

  1. You enjoy the learning process.
If you love rolling up your sleeves and figuring out new things, learning Squarespace is fun and a great way to unleash your creativity.

  2. You’re comfortable with tech.
Out-of-the-box solutions like Squarespace have become more complex, so you need to be comfortable with a steeper learning curve and also a good amount of patience. Personally, I love Squarespace’s intuitive design interface! So if, like me, you enjoy geeking out over multiple design options, and also enjoy figuring out things like SEO, AI visibility, domain or 3rd party connections, and how to make it all work together - then you’ll love working in Squarespace.

  3. You have more time than money.
DIY is a great option if you don’t have the funds to invest in a designer but have the time to dive into the project yourself.

  4. You want full creative control.
There’s no better way to understand your website inside out than to build it yourself. You can make your website look just how you want it and you’ll get the know-how to make changes in the future.

  5. Your business is brand new.
If you’re just experimenting to see if your business is viable, getting a simple yet stylish DIY website up quickly without investing a lot of money is a great way to test your ideas.

Hiring a designer might be right for you if:

  1. You have a budget.
A professionally designed website can range between $2,500 - $7,500 depending on the complexity of your business and whether you need an online shop or want to sell services online.

  2. You’re super busy.
If you’re booked out with client work, it can be more time- and cost-effective to outsource.

  3. You find tech overwhelming.
If words like “responsive design” or “jpeg” make you want to run for the hills, it can be a better use of time and energy to hire a designer.

  4. You’ve tried the DIY route before.
If you’ve lost days or even weeks fiddling with a DIY site and never got over the finish line, it may be time to call in the pros!

  5. You’re not in a hurry to get started.
Many web designers are booked out in advance, so there may be a wait before work can start.
