What to expect
Transparency and communication are very important to me. Here is an outline of my process and what to expect when you contact me about a potential web design project:
1. Free Consultation
This is usually done by Skype or phone and lasts between 30-60 minutes. If you live locally we can also meet at your office or at a cafe. We will talk about what you need and want for your new website and how I can help you make that vision reality. We will look at the desired structure and content of your website and the number of pages, which will determine my fee. We will also agree on a potential start date. Once we are happy that everything has been covered I will prepare a quote for you.
2. Quote, Contract and Invoice
I will email you three documents: my quote, my contract and an invoice for the deposit. You can accept and sign the quote and contract online. I require a 50% deposit to secure your spot in my schedule, you can either send me a check or pay online.
Once I have received your deposit I will send you a simple questionnaire to get a deeper sense for your design preferences. If you have no idea what you want, no problem! Just fill out what you can and I will come up with my own suggestions based on my understanding of your brand and needs.
4. Before the Project Starts
About a week before the project begins you will receive an invitation to a Dropbox folder where you can upload any images, graphics and documents that you would like to use. If you already have a Squarespace account I will ask you to add me as a contributor. Otherwise I will start your website from my own Squarespace account. As a Squarespace Circle member I get a free six-month trial period for each website so you don’t have to pay for hosting until we are ready to launch.
5. During the Project
My schedule accommodates both my web design and my e-course work. This means that I usually design websites on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and yours may take 4-6 weeks depending on its size and how many maintenance and support projects I am handling at the same time. I generally don’t work on more than one full development project at a time but occasionally that’s exactly what happens! If you have a firm deadline I will do my best to meet it! I liaise closely with my clients throughout the project to ensure that our expectations are communicated and aligned.
6. Design and Content
You will probably not hear from me for a few days when I start the project. I always begin by choosing a templates and basic design elements such as fonts and colors. I will contact you when I am ready for your feedback. Once we have agreed on the design I continue with the site structure and content and will contact you for feedback as I go along. While I have a certain design aesthetic that is my signature style – organized, clean, welcoming – my goal is to create a website that reflects you or your business within those parameters. When your clients visit your website there should be a sense of recognition with regards to your brand and personality. You can be as little or as much involved as you prefer during this phase, I am very flexible and can adapt to your needs.
7. Your Contribution
It is your responsibility to provide me with all the content for your site, i.e. text and images. I may adjust, change or expand some of the written content to align with the page structure or to optimize your content for SEO. However, you will always have the final say on your content. If you don’t have your own images we can either use stock photography or my photos. We will discuss this during our consultation. Please note that my fee includes up to two hours of image searches, after that I charge $85 per hour and of course you can find your own images if you want. As before, you can be as little or as much involved as you prefer.
If you already have a domain name I will connect it to Squarespace when we are ready to launch. At this point you will also need to create a Squarespace account if it’s still in trial. The domain changes can take up to 72 hours to propegate through the internet so make sure to leave enough time for this before announcing your new site.
9. Post Launch
Once we are live I will send you the final invoice as well as a fact sheet with technical information on your site, such as login details, color codes, custom code etc. Please keep this document in a safe place. Payment for the remainder of my fee is due upon receipt of the invoice. Again, you can pay by check or online.
10. Training & Support
I will train you on how to use your website, either during the project or shortly after completion. You also get one hour of free post-launch support. If you require support beyond this I am happy to send you my support agreement. My fee is $85 per hour.
