How To Build A Website In 6 Hours!

In essence, if we want to direct our lives, we must take control of our consistent actions. It’s not what we do once in a while that shapes our lives, but what we do consistently.
— Tony Robbins

The other day someone posted this in one of the Facebook business groups I follow: “Yay, just built my website in 6 hours!! And I can show you how to do the same!” I want to say I was astonished at all the feedback she got but I wasn’t really.

We are an instant gratification culture and the lure of riches on little effort has never been shinier.

And you know what? I totally get that. The appeal of instant gratification and easy achievements is not foreign to me, not at all. But if I have learned anything in my 50+ years it is that going after something I want takes planning, time and effort. Of course it helps if you enjoy what you do, that can make the process a little easier, but overall you still have to commit some sweat and tears on your path to success. Ok, perhaps I am being a little dramatic again but I think you know what I mean, right?

Of course I had to go and look at her site and yes, it kinda looked like a 6-hour out-of-the-box website (I think it was Wix). Nice first entry photo but when I looked more closely: the content was flat, the images mostly stock photos and click-bait graphics, and font use and styling were inconsistent. And I kinda get that, too. This young woman was enthusiastic and excited to be doing this herself, and she tried her best with what she had.

The platform that I love so much is not completely without blame, either. Squarespace market themselves as a stylish out-of-the-box product and to a degree that can work really well. Because they are that good.

However, my own approach is a little different, perhaps because I genuinely enjoy the design process. When I first discovered Squarespace I didn’t think “Oh, this is easy and I will have a great website quickly!” No, I thought ”Oh, this is easy and I am going to have so much fun with this!” That’s just who I am: my idea of R&R is redesigning my website and I am not even joking! But even I, who loves it and has done it many many times, take more than six hours to create a beautiful and well organized website.

And let’s also be realistic here. Squarespace, for all its amazingness, is not perfect and can occasionally frustrate me as well, although never as much as Wordpress used to. You can read more about why I fell in love with Squarespace after using Wordpress for many years right here.

All of this to say:

Building a beautiful, informative and well organized site requires some planning, patience and perseverance. Take your time to learn and experiment, and don’t forget to have some fun, too. Because with Squarespace you can!
